HIAWASSEE. Standing over 4700 feet above sea level, Brasstown Bald is the highest peak in the state and affords an outstanding panorama of the surrounding countryside – in fact, word has it that on a clear day, you can see all the way to Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The visitor center, which is at the summit, features a number of interpretative exhibits and educational programs, and for those who want to make a day of it, there are also hiking trails and picnic areas on the mountain. A word to the wise: At the peak of the fall season, the view from the Bald is nothing short of breathtaking.
