- When the local economy lagged in the 1960s, local businessmen approached John Kollock, an artist who had been stationed in Germany, for advice. To entice visitors, he suggested an Alpine look for the entire town, and Helen, in her new garb, now attracts millions of visitors each year.
- Located some 90 miles north of Atlanta in North Georgia's Blue Ridge Mountains and along the banks of the Chattahoochee River, Helen offers a beautiful, natural location that's just far enough from the big city to feel removed but not isolated. The town's Alpine theme adds a measure of interest to the already-lovely setting.
- Helen traces her beginnings to early Native American settlements along the river, after which pioneers arrived (in the 19th century), lured by gold and timber. The town actually did quite well for itself until the mid-20th century, when folks began to migrate to larger cities such as Atlanta. Only after this happened did the need for revitalization begin.
- The best time to visit Helen is in late summer or early fall, especially from mid-September to early October. During this time, the town hosts the Southeast's largest Oktoberfest event. The festive occasion offers nightly concerts, plenty of shopping and sightseeing, and a strong dose of traditional German food and beer.
- The winter holidays are also a great time to bring the family to Helen. When temperatures drop, the town decks itself in Christmas finery for Alpenfest, which runs from Thanksgiving into December.
- Venturing outside of town, visitors find ample opportunity to enjoy the region's natural beauty. Hiking, fishing, and horseback riding are popular pursuits – along with golf courses – and river tubing offers visitors the chance to see the area from a completely different vantage point.
