Additional shows are produced outside of the season, and children are given the opportunity to participate in activities after school, during the summer, and throughout the year. HICKORY. Founded in 1978, HCS is considered the area's foremost vocal ensemble. The 150-strong, all-volunteer group relies on the diverse talents of its members, who regularly perform such esteemed standards as Mozart's "Requiem," Beethoven's "Ninth Symphony," and Haydn's "Creation." Not only does Hickory benefit from the group's time and energies, but so do other cities in the state, nation, and even the UK. Typically, HCS presents a classical concert in the winter, a pops concert in the spring, and four Christmas concerts. The group performs in local churches; call for details.

DOWNTOWN. Classical music takes the forefront when this respected symphony steps onto the stage. Since it was created in 1964, the organization has graced the Unifour area with works by Brahms, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, and a host of equals. Guest artists are often highlighted, along with the assembled regulars, and a healthy slate of events includes the Masterworks series and special performances for children and the holidays. A strong educational component also colors the symphony, which frequently plays for school groups. WPS performs primarily at First Baptist Church; its offices can be found at the SALT Block.
