HICKORY. A cross between a pub and a sports bar, BW-3 (as it's called) caters to folks who want a casual place to hang out, munch terrific wings, and down a few brews. The interior features plenty of TVs, wall-hung pennants, jerseys, and neon beer signs. Come with a group of friends and kick back in the animated environment while you slough off the cares of the day. Salads, wraps, burgers, and sandwiches are available, along with the wings. Especially popular with college students in the evening.

DOWNTOWN. No sign marks this corner establishment, but folks in the local gay community know it as a place to gather with friends, have a drink or two, and dance to the hottest music of the moment. The Cabaret also welcomes folks who just want to enjoy the dance floor, so you'll often find straight couples taking advantage of the tunes and pulsing lights. In addition to weekly dance parties, the club hosts pool tournaments, karaoke events, and performances by female impersonators.

HICKORY. Part of a NC-based chain, this casual eatery combines sports-bar ambience with bar-and-grill food. Folks often stop in during the day for appetizers, salads, hot and cold deli sandwiches, juicy burgers, wraps and homemade chips. Pastas and entrees (which range from chicken-fried chicken to fish-and-chips) also make appearances, and a great selection of beers provides a cold complement to anything you choose. Plus, a big-screen TV welcomes sports fans when the big game's on, and live music and trivia events draw folks in when the evening begins.

Comfortably decorated, this appealing restaurant doesn't stand on pretense but offers pleasant surroundings wherein folks can relax, enjoy well-mixed drinks, and find delight in a carefully-prepared menu. Seafood is prominent, steaks make a great alternative, and salads and poultry dishes round out the options. Should you be anxious about the game, never fear: several TVs remain tuned in to whatever's most timely. Late hours are also a perk, although the place can get a bit noisy later on in the evening.

DOWNTOWN. Dimly lit and full of character, this long-lived pub sits below street level on a downtown corner. Its interior features lots of dark, polished wood and an array of memorabilia, as befits an Irish pub. Ease back at the bar with a glass of beer, either checking out what's on TV or checking in with other patrons. Otherwise, slide into a booth and take advantage of the menu's sandwiches, onion rings, and other pub fare. A great, relaxed place to socialize and hang out. Live entertainment several nights each week.

DOWNTOWN. Adding an extra dose of life to downtown Hickory, this establishment has cultivated quite a loyal following since its opening. It's best known for microbrews, most of which are crafted locally, but the Tap Room also boasts premium scotches and bourbons. Plus, the menu offers soups, salads, sandwiches, appetizers, and dinner entrees that perfectly complement the great beers. Live music gets folks rockin' every Thursday, and outdoor dining is a boon when the weather's warm. Don't forget to try the pale ale!

VIEWMONT. Always lively, Sgt. Peppers offers plenty of space for crowds to gather and folks to while away the night. A large, central bar ensures that drinks are easily had, and patrons often congregate to chat with friends or to catch the game on the TVs above or on the big-screen. Pool tables also grant the chance for some friendly competition. If food's in order, a host of appetizers is ideal for munching, along with burgers, sandwiches, pastas, steaks, and chicken and seafood dishes. On Saturday, live bands shake up the status quo with great rhythms and showmanship. When they play, a small cover is charged.
