HICKORY. Tucked discreetly into a former residence, 1859 Cafe greets patrons with a strong measure of hospitality and a well-conceived menu. Inside the romantic restaurant, guests can start with grilled oysters or lump crab cakes before moving to rack of lamb with hazelnut crust, bacon-wrapped grouper florentine, or roasted half-duck with port wine cherry sauce. Live music is a welcome perk on Saturday evenings, and outdoor dining pleases folks when the weather cooperates.

The casual place easily accommodates single diners or large groups, taking care of folks who come for heaping plates of fried and broiled fish and shellfish. Opt for flounder, scallops, shrimp, or combinations of such; they come accompanied by cole slaw and either baked potato or fries. Comfortably decorated, this appealing restaurant doesn't stand on pretense but offers pleasant surroundings wherein folks can relax, enjoy well-mixed drinks, and find delight in a carefully-prepared menu. Seafood is prominent, steaks make a great alternative, and salads and poultry dishes round out the options. Should you be anxious about the game, never fear: several TVs remain tuned in to whatever's most timely. Late hours are also a perk, although the place can get a bit noisy later on in the evening.

HICKORY. Taking its name from McGuffey's Readers, the series of 19th-century primers created for schoolchildren, this small chain maintains a similar – and capable – hand with basics. The place's interior has a comfortable feel, complete with warm colors and memorabilia. The menu stays the course, offering bar-and-grill fare with global influences. While you browse the menu, indulge in fried mushrooms and then make the hard decision between such delicious choices as pastas, fresh salads, and seafood dishes (to name but a few options).

HICKORY. Upscale casual dining and a terrific menu distinguish this restaurant, which is as good for a quick lunch as for a romantic dinner. The quality of the food is unfailingly high, as seen in certified Angus steaks, aged for weeks and broiled to your specifications. Freshly delivered seafood and lush pasta dishes also satisfy, as do baby back ribs and prime rib sandwiches. Plus, authentic NY cheesecake makes an ideal cap to anything you choose. The wine list highlights selections from California and Washington State.

DOWNTOWN. Occupying a gracious old home, this restaurant draws many couples who want to enjoy a refined dining experience or a special-occasion meal. The romantic interior offers several different rooms in which patrons may dine, and the home's architectural details and leaded-glass windows create a wonderful evening setting. The menu is an elegant foray into American Continental fare, featuring dishes like beef medallions and a great wine list. Located on the outskirts of downtown.

VIEWMONT. Open and airy, this restaurant lies just off Highway 127 and is considered one of Hickory's best. Warm, contemporary decor establishes a stylish setting for a menu that revels in wood-fired dishes. Among the selections you'll find are oak-grilled Australian lamb loin, crispy duck breast, sauteed diver scallops, and a rib-eye of Angus beef with horseradish whipped potatoes. The menu changes regularly to take advantage of what's freshest, and live jazz and piano music are enticing standards.
