HICKORY. With a reputation as one of Hickory's top restaurants, this enterprise benefits from the expertise of its owners, two Italian brothers. Elegant, Old World interiors feature polished woods, warm colors, gilt-framed art, and candlelight. A stone fireplace adds even more appeal. The authentic menu is a gourmand's delight, awash in succulent pastas, fresh-baked pizzas, and entrees centered around seafood, chicken, and veal. A wonderful bar and outdoor dining only add to the allure of this much-favored restaurant.

HICKORY. Diners find much to applaud at this Japanese steakhouse, which combines great food and culinary acrobatics. Patrons gather at large, communal tables, watching animated chefs slice, sautée, and prepare healthy portions of meat, seafood, rice, and vegetables for appreciative onlookers. Kids, especially, can't seem to get enough of the spectacle, although it's a favorite of young and old alike. Along with full meals, you can also get fresh sushi and other Japanese dishes.

SPRINGS ROAD. Tucked away in an unassuming strip mall, this restaurant has gained a strong local following, mostly by word of mouth. Owner-chef Tia beautifully presents the cuisine of her heritage, gracing Hickory with traditional Thai and Laotian dishes. In fact, food is the stand-out in the simple space, courtesy of fresh ingredients and judicious spicing. Stir-fried dishes, curries, and noodle entrees studded with meats, vegetables, and herbs prove the kitchen's skills. Their heat level can be altered to your taste, but if you overdo it, temper everything with one of the delectable, homemade fruit ice creams.
