NEWTON. Since its inception in 1986, this community theater has delighted audiences and provided an outlet to creative folks who want to bolster theater in eastern Catawba County. The Green Room's typical season includes two musicals, a children's show, a family show, and either a comedy or a drama. Additional shows are produced outside of the season, and children are given the opportunity to participate in activities after school, during the summer, and throughout the year. Past shows have included "The Sound of Music," "Anne of Green Gables," and "Steel Magnolias."

HICKORY. Founded in 1978, HCS is considered the area's foremost vocal ensemble. The 150-strong, all-volunteer group relies on the diverse talents of its members, who regularly perform such esteemed standards as Mozart's "Requiem," Beethoven's "Ninth Symphony," and Haydn's "Creation." Not only does Hickory benefit from the group's time and energies, but so do other cities in the state, nation, and even the UK. Typically, HCS presents a classical concert in the winter, a pops concert in the spring, and four Christmas concerts. The group performs in local churches; call for details.

DOWNTOWN. This long-lived theater has been delighting Hickory folks since 1949, when its first show premiered. In the years since, the place's popularity has only increased, and today, HCT's season includes internationally known plays as well as ones by local dramatists. Two stages host a variety of productions, including "Glengarry Glen Ross," "Guys & Dolls," "To Kill a Mockingbird," and "Charlotte's Web." A great place to see a show or to be involved in mounting one.
