Interesting Facts

  1. It's not Spanish and it's not moss, but it is called Spanish Moss. The silvery-green plant that hangs from trees is a relative of the pineapple. The plant does not hurt the tree and is used by some birds as nesting material. Spanish moss was used by Henry Ford, Sr. as seat stuffing for his original Model T. Others used the plant as stuffing for mattresses until they found that insects infested the mass – hence the phrase, "Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite."
  2. I'm going to Disney World! Well, it's not quite Disney World but it is the Disney Hilton Head Resort. Secluded on an island in Shelter Cove Harbor, this resort provides guests with plenty of sand and surf. A wonderful themed swimming pool will make a real splash with kids of all ages!
  3. Even though Hilton Head consists of only 42 square miles, you can bet you won't be disappointed by lack of golf or tennis. More than 40 area courses are open to the public. Tennis anyone? Hilton Head is home to over 300 courts!
  4. Sea Pines in Hilton Head was the nation's first master planned resort community. Today, this 5000 acre ocean front golf resort continues its legacy in being environmentally conscious.
  5. When it comes to spectator sports, Hilton Head delivers! For the past 25 years, Hilton Head has been home to the MCI Classic – The Heritage of Golf and the Family Circle Cup Women's Tennis Championship. Both of these tournaments attract the top athletes in each sport.
  6. You can look but don't touch! The Loggerhead turtles of Hilton Head build approximately 100 nests a year. However, only 1 in 10,000 eggs survives to adulthood, making them a threatened species. It is illegal to bother them or their nesting areas. In fact, there are several prohibitions regarding numerous island inhabitants, so look but don't touch – just to be on the safe side!
  7. WOW! That's salty! There's no way to travel around the island and not notice the breezy plants known as Spartina Grass. It is the only species that can withstand the high salinity of the salt marsh.
  8. It's just across the bridge – that's no bluff! Named for its spot atop a high bluff along the May River, Bluffton provided a haven for cotton and rice plantation owners when the deadly Yellow Fever afflicted their plantations. The high bluffs facing the river eagerly greeted the strong winds that helped to keep mosquito infestation to a minimum.
  9. The Hallelujah Singers, a local group, were organized to preserve the melodies and stories unique to the Gullahs, a community of black people who were among the first inhabitants of the Sea Islands. The singers appeared in Forrest Gump. The group's founder, Marlena Smalls, played the role of Bubba's mama.
  10. Life's a beach! Even though Hilton Head is small – only 12 miles long and 5 miles wide, it's a fair assumption to say that beaches are plentiful! Recreational opportunities abound: swimming, fishing, boating and scuba diving – among many others. But just a friendly reminder, you'll have to wait to pop open that "cool one." Alcoholic beverages are prohibited on any beach.
