Overview

In 1997, Hong Kong was handed back to China, and given the status of a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (SAR, PRC). While the land area is more than 1000 square kilometers (400 square miles), a portion of that number is actually made up of small outlying islands and vast tracts of uninhabited parkland. Most of the population (about seven million people) resides in Central and Kowloon, making Hong Kong the third most densely populated place in the world. A vibrant and exciting destination for tourists, the city is notable for its thriving restaurant scene, complete with efforts from international chefs such as Alain Ducasse, Nobu Matsuhisa and Jo�l Robuchon. Visitors are frequently enticed by Hong Kong's legendary shopping, and whether your style is pristine mall or earthy street market, you'll find it here. Besides eating and shopping, Hong Kong has a huge variety of fun things to see and do. In 2005, Hong Kong Disneyland opened on Lantau Island, but Ocean Park is a wonderful alternative. Hiking is a popular pastime here, and there are well-marked trails throughout all the parks; Hong Kong loves gardens as well, and you'll find numerous formal and informal garden spaces all over town. If you're looking for an outdoorsy vacation, Hong Kong's crowds are surprisingly easy to get away from. It offers the best of both worlds: urban sophistication and natural serenity.
