- Consider this: Hong Kong's cost of living is high, but the cost of dying here is even higher. In most places, when you buy a cemetery plot you can rest assured that your remains will stay there for eternity. Not so in space-starved Hong Kong, where buying a burial plot actually equates to "renting" one for a few years, after which your relatives can pay again or disinter your remains and have them cremated. Even a so-called "permanent" plot isn't: the land is owned by the government, which simply leases it to the cemetery operator.
- In order to preserve a landmark century-old banyan tree that was growing in the path of construction for the Pacific Place complex, the city of Hong Kong paid $24 million to have it dug up and replanted a few meters away in Hong Kong Park.
- Hong Kong Park has plenty to recommend it, including the fascinating Edward Youde Aviary, where visitors wend their way through the treetops along an elevated walkway. The aviary encompasses about 3000 square meters (about 32,000 square feet) over a valley, and is home to about 100 species of birds.
- About two-thirds of Hong Kong's land area is undeveloped parkland, the vast majority of which is located outside the urban center.
