ALA MOANA. You can't miss this casual place, thanks to its brick-red exterior and white trim. That's not what you'll remember, though, after you've tried the downhome Southern fare. Dixie is perfect for a family outing, especially since everybody likes burgers, ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, and barbecued or fried chicken. You'll also find fried shrimp and catfish, steamed crabs, and even steak. Add in beans, hush puppies, cole slaw, and pecan pie, and you've got the recipe for good eatin'! And you don't have to dress up, either.

WAIKIKI. In tribute to Duke Kahanamoku, Hawaii's renowned swimmer, surfer, and Olympic athlete, this casual restaurant offers patrons a wealth of island culture. Memorabilia, live Hawaiian music, and fresh local seafood are among the attractions that have folks returning again and again. Food is served all day, and lunchtime brings fresh fish, steaks, burgers, pizza, and sandwiches. A midday buffet features kalua pork, teriyaki chicken, just-caught fish, and a salad bar. The hula pie, a house special, is not-to-be-missed.

WAIKIKI. Named after a Charlie Chan detective novel, this beachfront restaurant is a favorite spot for relaxing meals. Its views of Diamond Head and the water are a great complement to lunchtime fare, which includes calamari, substantial salads, a selection of sandwiches, and everything from pastas, curries, and roast chicken to sauteed mahimahi and saimin, the local broth-and-noodle soup. In the evenings, as the sun goes down, visitors are graced by Hawaiian music and hula dancing beneath a century-old tree. Great ambience.

ALA MOANA. As you would expect of a restaurant set in Neiman Marcus, Mariposa boasts incredible – albeit pricey – cuisine. The lovely establishment affords wonderful ocean views, granting diners a visual treat to accompany their culinary ones. The cuisine is a mix of Neiman's Texas roots and its Honolulu locale, featuring everything from spiced prawns to ribs, lamb, fresh fish, and steaks. Flavors are bold and tantalizing, ideal mid-shopping spree or for a leisurely dinner. (A private elevator extends restaurant hours after the department store closes.)

KAPAHULU. Authentic Hawaiian food – what real island folks eat! – is the amazing draw at this unassuming place. It's always crowded, and it's largely take-out, but it's worth searching out. Kalua (roast) pig is a favorite, as is lomi-lomi salmon (prepared with sweet onions and tomato), laulau (steamed pork and butterfish), and haupia (coconut pudding). You'll get large servings, and you won't pay an-arm-and-a-leg for great food. Plus, you'll learn first-hand the meaning of "ono." (It's delicious!)

DOWNTOWN. This gracious, airy cafe plies guests not only with incredible food but with inviting garden views and Dale Chihuly's striking glass sculptures. Such beauty demands great fare, and chef Mike Nevin only employs the best local ingredients for his light, fresh cuisine. Join an upscale crowd as you sample a beef tenderloin sandwich, white bean salad laced with parmesan and balsamic vinegar, or a roast turkey sandwich dressed with a zesty chutney. If you're lunching and don't have time to visit the museum, the entrance fee will be waived.

ALA MOANA. Although Side Street has the look and feel of a bar, you might be surprised by the quality of its cuisine. Tuck in to a hearty lunch of tender ribs, spicy pork chops, seared tuna, or perhaps just fried rice or garlic edamame if you're looking for a lighter option. Chefs from Hawaii's top restaurants have been spotted lunching here, so pull up a chair, take in a game on one of the TVs, and enjoy exceptional, low-key eats.

ALA MOANA. An island staple for many years before it closed in the mid-90s, this delightful restaurant was reinvigorated in 1999. These days, it serves great buffet meals that diners enjoy amid an outdoor tropical setting, complete with waterfalls and a pond. Curries are the restaurant's signature, and you'll find several of them, along with hearty salads, soups, carved meats, and more. Island specialties can also be had and merit sampling for their fresh flavors. Upstairs, a fine-dining room offers a la carte options.
Looking for light and tasty dishes with a quick turn-around time? Or perhaps a power lunch to close the deal? Here, you’ll find the right setting for either! An assortment of decors from casual and sporty to sophisticated and businesslike. You may also find the option of ordering take-out food.
