RIVER OAKS.   It's all casual at this appealing diner, which sits adjacent to a local drug store. Red-and-black checkered floors, vinyl-covered booths, counter seating, ceiling fans, and warm-hearted servers give it charm, and regulars can't get enough of the delicious food. Farm-fresh breakfasts and hot plate lunches have kept Avalon humming along since 1938, and there's no signs of its stopping. Cheeseburgers, milkshakes, and homemade lemonade are sublime, as are crisp-edged waffles, omelets, French toast, migas, huevos rancheros, and chicken-fried steak and eggs. Expect a crowd.   (© 10Best)

We decided to go to the Avalon Diner for breakfast on a sunday morning. We got there and didn't have to wait long for a table and they were relatively buisy. Once we sat down it took our server 10-15 min. to even ask us if we would like something to drink. We saw our server 2 more times throughout our meal (to bring us silverware and our check). His attitude was the worst I have seen in a long time. If I would ask for something he would tell me to hold on and then take a while to get me what I needed (like silverware when my food was already at my table getting cold). The food was pretty good, but the loudness and service will make you so overstimulated and aggitated by the end of the meal. It was not a pleasant and relaxing breakfast and we will never go back.

Food was great. Service by one waitress was not so good. She was more interested in going to the end of the counter and leaning on it or sitting on a stool. I think she retired but just hasn't left yet. We finally got a refill on coffee (breakfast time) from another waitress who was great.

I have lived in Texas all my life, so I am well aware of Avalon Diner, my family and I eat there as often as we can. The Avalon listed above does need some much-needed work, they seem to have lost interest in their customers. It is almost like eating at McDonalds, fast food, fast service with rude workers to serve you that fast food. My wife was out one day shopping with her girlfriends at the Town and Country Mall when they came across yet another Avalon in the Fountains, when she arrived home later that day, she informed me of this "new find". So that weekend, we went took the kids out to Stafford and try this "new" Diner out, they were wonderful! The food was hot, fresh and never tasted Fast foodish. The Service out there was like anything we have ever come across! So our advice, go to Stafford if you want to experience the best Avalon diner in Houston, the other one cannot compete!Rick
