HUNTINGTON. Named for Chief Justice John Marshall, this university traces its roots to 1837, when a small academy was established in the western corner of what was then Virginia. These days, the university (a classification earned in 1961) enjoys a fine reputation for teacher training, in addition to liberal arts, business, and medical programs. Arts enjoy a key role too, thanks to state-of-the-art Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center. The school's Thundering Herd athletic teams, whose bold green "M" is recognized all over the country, compete on the NCAA Division 1-A level and enjoy a wide loyal following.
