4. Obelisco a los Corsarios (Monument al Corsaris)

LA MARINA.   This monument to privateers is located on a traffic circle in the harbor of Eivissa. Privateers were commissioned by the king of Spain starting in 17th century to plunder other countries' pirate ships and give a fifth of the bounty to the crown and keep the remainder. The privateers played an important part in the economy of Ibiza, as these raids brought consumer goods to the island, which never would have been able to obtain them otherwise. The practice of privateering was outlawed in 1908.   (© 10Best)
