  1. Myth, monster or mirage? Nearby Loch Ness is most famous for its legendary monster Nessie, whose existence has remained a mystery since the monster's first supposed appearance in 1933.
  2. The arrival of St. Columba, who came as a missionary to the Picts in 565, is one of the earliest milestones in Inverness's history. In the early 13th Century, William the Lion granted the town four charters and made Inverness a royal burgh.
  3. Previously a county town, Inverness was designated a city by the queen in 2000.
  4. Shakespearean king MacBeth was thane of the neighboring town of Cawdor. Although visitors often associate present day Cawdor Castle with the play, the castle was not built until the 14th century, several hundred years after MacBeth's reign.
  5. Inverness gets its name from its proximity to the River Ness: the Scots Gaelic name, Inbhir Nis, translates as "mouth of the Ness."
  6. The sole city in the Highlands, Inverness sustains its economy through tourism, retail, administration, and production of healthcare supplies.
  7. Each September, bagpipers convene in Inverness for the highly renowned Northern Meeting, an international solo competition.
  8. The Old High Church on St. Michael's Mount is the city's oldest house of worship, on a site that may have first been used by the Celts for religious gatherings.
  9. At nearby Culloden Battlefield in 1746, the English defeated contender Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites, who lost 1200 men in only 40 minutes.
  10. The Inverness Museum and Art Gallery captures the highlights of the city's history and culture with archeology, art and natural history exhibits, and reconstructed workshops that recall daily life in centuries past.
