8. The Brown Bottle

IOWA CITY.   Named for the colored vessels used by the Schlitz Brewery in the 1970s, this appealing restaurant has built its substantial reputation on rustic, flavor-packed fare. An Italian sensibility colors the menu, which delivers everything from veal scaloppine to seafood lasagna and garlic chicken.
