Dating back to the 12th century, Carisbrooke Castle has witnessed many famous visitors and has successfully weathered the test of time. King Charles I was imprisoned here during the English Civil War, and the castle was used during warfare against the French and Spanish. Guests today can see how water was drawn from the well in old times, via a turned waterwheel. Donkeys were used to do this task in the 17th century, but before that, prisoners held at the castle performed this laborious waterwheel operation. The Isle of Wight museum is located on the castle grounds as well.
