MARSHALL. About a 45 minute drive from downtown Kalamazoo, this historic town east of Battle Creek is listed as a National Historic Landmark District, thanks to its many 19th-century homes and buildings. When the city was founded in the 1830s, scores of doctors and lawyers moved there, expecting it to become the state capital (the honor, instead, went to Lansing). After seeing its fortunes rise and fall several times over the next 150 or so years, the town experienced a rebirth of sorts in the late 20th century and once again became a fashionable place to live, shop for antiques, and tour historic homes. In September, the Marshall Historical Society (269-781-8544) offers the Historical Marshall Home Tour, a much anticipated event that gives visitors an inside look at some of the district's most beautiful old homes and businesses.
