OVERLAND PARK.
Renowned barbecue chef Hayward Spears and family offer excellent BBQ-ed ribs, burnt ends (aka beef briskets), smoked sausages, and tangy chicken for the hordes that swarm into this cozy eatery every day. Great eats and excellent service – these are staples at Hayward's Pit Barbecue, where the sauce is hot and spicy and the waitstaff warm and inviting. Casual attire is suggested, and reservations are required for parties of eight or more.

I grew up on this BBQ and love the food and little more spicy sauce. Mr. Hayward back in the day was a regular fixture. Service is very friendly, seating is good with lots of space, and carryout is great for hosting parties or family dinner. Less smoky taste as others may have but meats are good quality and full of great flavors.

This should definately not be in the top 10 anywhere, i live in kc and grew up on truly great bbq and this just isn't it. Extremely fatty meat with very little flavor. Drive a mile in any direction a go to one of the better places around here. eg fiorella's, bb's, or oklahoma joes, vist any besides haywards.

The best is still the King, in my book. While Hayward Sr. is half retired and there is an issue, at least the last time I checked, about whose leadership the restaurant will benefit from after Hayward Sr. isn't around anymore, the food is still outstanding. The restaurant was clean, staff was hospitable, friendly, and still made you feel at ease. The brisket is the best in KC or on any other planet. Incredibly tender. Sauce is the mainstay. There is none better. The only improvement I'd make is go away from the steak fries to a thinner cut.
