SOUTH KANSAS CITY. When the Compton family bought this frontier home in 1840, it quickly became the social center of rural Clayton County. Today, the tradition continues with Stroud's, a Kansas City staple whose menu runs the gamut (although fried chicken and chicken-fried steak are the most popular choices). A casual, family-friendly setting awaits, complete with 19th-century decor, a piano player who knows downhome tunes, and original Compton family furnishings.
