DOWNTOWN. Vegetarian cuisine that tastes great? Yes, if it's at Bluebird Bistro, where they make simply spectacular soups and specialty pizzas. The comfortable spot, which also offers dishes that incorporate meat and seafood, makes you feel right at home, and much of the produce the cafe uses comes from a garden right across the street. When you stop for lunch, you get not only healthy food but great, tasty cuisine to boot.

PRAIRIE VILLAGE. Formerly Boulangerie Philippe, this place has expanded its offerings to include paninis, soups, salads, and pastas. It's an ideal place for stopping in to enjoy a honey pecan turkey wrap, a roast beef and provolone panini, or a chicken caesar salad supreme. More filling options include cheesy baked tortellini or chicken carbonara pasta, fragrant with smoked bacon and cracked black pepper. Afterwards, try out a cookie or scone and an espresso, or finish up with a glass of wine.

WESTPORT. Although it now has several local branches, the original location of this deli and lunch spot is the most popular. Patrons can't get enough of made-daily pastas and sauces, and Cupini's has responded by selling both at the counter for at-home noshing. Come after the lunch rush if you'd actually like to be seated, and try to choose from a hot meatball panini, cannelloni, the vegetarian Adriano pizza, and many more selections. Notable soups, salads, and desserts provide alternatives for light-lunchers and sweet tooths.

DOWNTOWN. To those longing for a NYC-style corned beef deli sandwich or a thin-crust pizza, locals point out this downtown standard, where exposed brick walls, hardwood floors, tin ceilings, and a nostalgic lunch counter seem more Big Apple than Midwestern. Boasting what many regard as KC's best pizzas, Gibraltar-sized subs, and homemade apple pie, d'Bronx never fails to impress and satisfy. There's a second location in the Crown Center (816-842-2211).

Housed in a refurbished Texaco station, this stylish establishment is billed as the country's first wine bar. It sports the largest by-the-glass wine list in the city and boasts an incredible patio that's always busy on mild days. The Continental menu features savory, light fare at lunch, including conch chowder, turkey sandwiches, fresh salads, and an intriguing pasta-crust pizza. Evening entrees are more substantial but equally pleasing. Just look to the crowds for proof.

WESTPORT. The difference is in the dough at Minsky's. Made fresh daily at each location, it comes in five varieties: original, thin-crust, pan, honey and wheat, and herbed. Numerous toppings (including zucchini, alfredo sauce, and sauerkraut, along with more traditional options) are then piled high on your crust of choice, resulting in a pizza that many locals claim to be the best in town. Any pizza can also be transformed into a calzone, should you need a change of pace. Cheap beer and several TVs add to the casual, relaxed vibe.

DOWNTOWN. Named after railroad magnate John Pierpont Morgan and located in refurbished Union Station, this fine restaurant is an excellent choice any time of day. At lunch, try a crab cake melt sandwich, a grilled shrimp spinach salad, or even a "small plate" option like macaroni and lobster with fresh asparagus. While dining, check out the early 20th-century decor and exquisite architectural features that distinguish the striking train depot. Business dress.

Cleverly marketed with an animated, spatula-wielding super-chef and a slogan that asserts "People's Champion, Urban Legend, Fast Food Fighter," Souperman combats the crime of unhealthy, overly expensive lunches. Offering five soups (in two sizes), salads, and wrap sandwiches, the eatery provides lots of choices and permits quick dining with the perk of culinary creativity. Consider West African peanut chicken soup, broccoli salad with smoked almonds and parmesan, or a sandwich of barbecued brisket, blue cheese, and caramelized onions. They, and their compadres, are certain to leave other lunch contenders beaten-down in the dust.
Looking for light and tasty dishes with a quick turn-around time? Or perhaps a power lunch to close the deal? Here, you’ll find the right setting for either! An assortment of decors from casual and sporty to sophisticated and businesslike. You may also find the option of ordering take-out food.
