DOWNTOWN.
Upon close inspection, you'll likely determine that little has changed about this KC staple since it first opened back in the 1940s. Golden Ox is the quintessential Midwestern steakhouse, complete with "City Slickers"-style ambiance: dark wood paneling, dim lighting, Western-themed decor, and a wagon wheel chandelier. Vegetarians and dieters beware: Black Angus cuts and highly regarded prime rib are king here, and entrées come with large portions of hot vegetables and starchy sides.

The Ox isn't Golden anymore!!!
Very, Very Disappointing. On a Tuesday night we were seated at 6pm. The place was not busy but it took at least 15 minutes for the waiter to appear at our table. And another 15 minutes to reappear with the drinks. Another 15 minutes before we were able to order an appetizer and another 15 minutes before we got the appetizer and could order our dinners. You can see where this is going. Once we finally got our dinners, 3 of the 6 entrees were cool to the touch and my Ribeye steak was certainly tougher than I've had at many other KC steakhouses. No we won't be going back to the Golden Ox anytime soon.

The best in KC, right in the stockyards. A true Kansas City classic, great steaks with an open kitchen. Enjoy!

Eating at this steakhouse was a great disappointment. I had known about it for years, and knew that it was regarded as an institution in K.C. - the 16 oz. K.C. strip had to be sent back because they were cold. There were only three people in the restaurant, my party and no other customers came in the whole time we were there. The steaks were not charred at all, and even had a "grey" look to them. They obviously don't have the high temperature wood-burning stove that we expected, and we were shocked that, we being the only customers there.....why was the food cold? I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone traveling to K.C., unless it was just for nostalgia's sake. I have my doubts that this once renown place to eat will even make it, unless they do something dramatic to turn things around.
