WAILUA.   On the very site of an ancient Hawaiian village, this modern-day equivalent has been erected to teach visitors about the islands before Western contact. The compound, lying along the Wailua River, showcases (replicated) homes and community buildings, including those used by the chief and those devoted to storing herbal remedies. Visitors may also catch demonstrations of cloth-making, agriculture, and poi-making and learn about early religion and social interaction. Educational and enlightening for the whole family.   (© 10Best)

This unassuming, unpolished site (first viewed from the bridge above after stopping to see waterfalls on the main road) lies tucked beneath palm trees along the river. It was a real treat! Don't expect glitz or hype. Drive down, park, get a laminated map of the site and look around... There's more here than you think! Enter each building, feel the real atmosphere of life before (so feasible) and sense how it all worked. You may see wild boar and peacocks roaming the site. Flora labeled. Restrooms, pop machine, $5/person. Bring a camera. (a scene from "Outbreak" with Dustin Hoffman was also filmed here).
