A member of the National Tropical Botanical Garden, Allerton occupies the grounds that once graced a private estate. The manicured gardens consist of a series of outdoor venues that have their own unique traits and are distinguished by fountains, statues, and exotic plantings. Around each bend, there's a new vista, a new series of scents, and a new opportunity to be enchanted. Rare and native plants can both be viewed; advance reservations are required for entrance.

We got on-line to make a reservation and we didn't know they close their booking days before the tour is filled. So we came back on our next trip and found out we should have just called and we did. The prices were not 35.00 but 40.00 per person. Had we know this we would have bought a membership in advance for our large family. But you can not purchase a membership on the day of the tour for no real real reason, so we were a bit disappointed with their fund raising/ membership/ tour prices and explanations. While the tour itself was spectacular the guide was very shrill about the all the poisonous plants and all the do's and don't. It was as if we were between a Disneyland water Amazon ride and on the other side a sort of smug litany of scientific plant names. While Hawaiian plants are important, the Allerton story, biodiversity, and Aloha were not stressed. The kids put it best, really cool but like mean teachers, and for kids, if there isn't a story, they don't remember names and percentages.If the we could subtract the human element it would be 5 stars.
