LIHUE.   Awarded for creating some of the island's best cuisine, Cafe Portofino also graces diners with soothing views of Kalapaki Bay and the Kauai landscape. The menu focuses on northern Italian dishes, and you'll find sweetbreads, rabbit, osso bucco, and fresh seafood to tempt your palate. The range of pastas is also satisfying, as is the substantial antipasti selection. An outdoor deck affords the best vantage point for the beautiful scenery, and live music adds a pleasant detail to a terrific dinner.   (© 10Best)

One of the 10worst restaurants in Kauai
My first experience with Cafe Portofino was good. The food was tasty and the waitress knowledgeable. (This was 3 years ago). I can no longer recommend this restaurant or consider it a 10best. The owner has a snooty air about him and the waiter and waitresses were inexperienced and did not know alot about the food featured on the menu. The $9 salad was at most a 1 cup portion size. The fish was overcooked and the pasta bathed in oil. The canneloni ordinary and the sauce was blah. The lasagna was small, burnt around the edges and the noodle was tough (you had to cut it with a knife). The food was also served warm and not hot . The owner's response to the poor quality food was that he "hopes we do better next time." There are so many other wonderful restaurants in Kauai. Save your money and take it to Gaylords, Dukes, Roy's, Hukilau, Kukui's, etc. The only pleasant thing about the dinner was listening to the harpist and taking in the view of the Kalapaki Bay

I was a little disappointed in the service this trip. Having dined there before, my wife and I had decided to dine there 3 times during the week. We noticed the service was a little down the first trip, but on our second visit two nights later, the service level was noticeably better. The food was still excellent, but after all, excellent service makes for an overall good visit. We cancelled our last scheduled reservation. I hope next time we are in Kauai things have changed.

Ambiance and food were absolutely incredible! Spent two weeks in Kauai for honeymoon and this Cafe Portofino was BY FAR, our favorite dining experience! Make sure to get a table outside on the deck!
