ST. MARYS. Just a short drive northeast of Kingsland, Crooked River provides a beautiful natural setting for a daytrip or even a few nights of camping along the Georgia coast. Primitive campsites are available, but if more "structured" accommodations are in order, the park also features several cottages that overlook the river. Among the activities available at Crooked River are boating and kayaking, saltwater fishing, hiking and bird-watching.

ST. MARYS. Once a retreat for the Carnegies and Rockefellers, Cumberland Island is one of the last unspoiled landscapes on the East Coast. Accessible only by boat, the island is a place of natural splendor – a place where acres of marshland and century-old sea oaks shelter deer, wild pigs, armadillos, alligators and wild horses from the sight of man. The island's 18 miles of white-sand beaches and its fascinating architecture, some in ruins, make it an alluring daytrip for people staying in the area. The exclusive Greyfield Inn, a stately reminder of Cumberland's genteel past, is the island's hotel.

Downtown Brunswick

BRUNSWICK. One of the state's oldest cities, Brunswick was laid out in 1771 by James Oglethorpe. The downtown grid covers several city blocks; however, most prominent points of interest are concentrated along the lovely waterfront. The city's marina bustles with commercial and private boat traffic from all over the world, and Newcastle Street's galleries, antique shops and boutiques remain busy throughout the year. The downtown area also boasts a handful of good restaurants and cafes.

ST. MARYS. Interstate-95 physically separates the communities of Kingsland and St. Marys, which would be a world apart even without the division. In contrast to Kingsland's familiar chain restaurants and modern hotels, St. Marys has done little to shake off the trappings of a small coastal community. Moreover, friendly residents embrace the town's role as a gateway to Cumberland Island and relish the fact that, despite modern impulses, their downtown businesses have thrived. St. Marys is that rare town that doesn't mind being a secret but has no problem rolling out the red carpet and turning on its Southern charm.

Jekyll Island

JEKYLL ISLAND. Arguably the Peach State's most written-about beach area, Jekyll, like St. Simons to the north, has for years attracted vacationers willing to splurge on life's finer pursuits. Today, a world-class tennis facility, challenging golf courses, and opportunities to sea kayak, horseback ride on the beach, fish and hunt draw an even wider spectrum of visitors. Shoppers, too, find much to their liking, thanks to high-end retailers who've set up shop at the Pier Roads Shops and in the Historic District. Even so, some things never change – among them, the island's prestige as one of Georgia's coastal gems.

Laurel Island Links Golf Course

233 Marsh Harbour Pkwy, Kingsland, GA 31548 · 912-729-7277

KINGSLAND. Designed by Davis Love III, this course challenges both novices and seasoned golfers with a layout that takes full advantage of nooks and crannies created by the Crooked River. Laurel Island has collected a handful of awards over the years, and its dramatic landscape features rolling, tree-lined fairways, picturesque marshes and impeccably manicured greens. A great place to spend a morning or afternoon swinging away. NB Shirt with collar required (or mock); no denim shorts or pants; soft spikes only.

FOLKSTON. Nature-lovers take notice: Just 20 miles east of busy I-95 is a mysterious place of Spanish moss and cypress trees. Essentially an enormous peat bog that lies 100 or so feet below sea level, the legendary Okefenokee Swamp – whose dark, slow waters shelter alligators, snakes, fish, wading birds, and lily pads of all sizes – was designated a National Wildlife Refuge in 1936 and spans nearly 400,000 square acres. Canoeing, hiking, wildlife viewing, hunting and fishing are all allowed, although seasonal restrictions may apply.

Orange Hall House Museum

ST. MARYS. One of St. Marys' most historic and architecturally significant homes, Orange Hall is a striking example of the Greek Revival style popular in the area from the early to mid 19th century. From the street, the antebellum mansion, with its grand white columns and stately facade, certainly captivates the imagination, summoning images of high society soirees and Southern epics. Today, the home is open for public touring, a gentrified timekeeper of St. Marys' rich heritage.

ST. MARYS. For those with an interest in the history of US Navy submariners, this facility on the St. Marys waterfront is a must-see. "Commissioned" in 1996, the museum features a working Type-8 periscope, a sonar system console, a Mark 14 torpedo, and an informative collection of documents, photos and models dealing with the evolution of the submarine. Plan to spend at least a couple of hours touring the museum.

St. Simons Island

ST. SIMONS ISLAND. One of many barrier islands sprinkled along the Georgia coastline, St. Simons has long been an enclave of retirees and the affluent. Along with the other Golden Isles (Sea, Jekyll and Sapelo), St. Simons has avoided the commercialism that sometimes plagues South Carolina and Florida's high-profile beaches. The result, of course, is a charming, endearing coastal retreat that moves at its own leisurely pace. It's a place of spectacular sunsets over the Marshes of Glynn; a place that affords romantic strolls along streets shaded by moss-draped sea oaks; a place that allows you to rise early and spend reflective hours on the wide, sandy beach all by your lonesome. Good restaurants, friendly people and terrific golf round out the St. Simons experience.
