Overview
Kingsport joined with Bristol, Johnson City and 40 other communities in Eastern Tennessee and Southwestern Virginia to form the Tri-City area, which was designated 1999's All-American City, the first such cooperative effort to achieve the honor. This honor was a far cry from Kingsport's rather humble beginnings in the late 18th century, when William King established a Holston River crossing service here and the likes of Daniel Boone led pioneers down the nearby Wilderness Trail into the Great Unknown. The next hundred years saw communities rise up on either side of the river and merge to form the municipality of King's Port. Today, locals have managed to preserve their frontier past at historic places like the Netherland Inn and Exchange Place. Modern Kingsport, a planned city that was designed beside the original town, is a city of growth and promise, and it's fitting that their New Year's celebration, First Night, is one of the biggest parties of the year.
