1. Big Al's Pizza

DOWNTOWN.   This joint occupies a beautifully renovated red-brick building, its interior decorated with old signs, a bi-plane flown by the Bartles & James boys, and a vintage car "crashing through" the front wall. Meanwhile, ceiling fans and chandeliers hang from high black ceilings. Behind the pub-like bar are colorful, stained-glass beer ads, including one for La Crosse's famous son, Old Style. Order a pint of the house's specially-brewed Alfunbräu beer to enjoy with a terrific pizza topped with everything from artichoke hearts and fresh garlic to ripe olives and shrimp. I've always loved the pizza and the atmosphere there. Great place to start a night downtown.
