SAINTE-ANNE-DE-BEAUPRÉ. This awe-inspiring river gorge and waterfall is one of the gems of the area known as the Beaupré Coast. As the Sainte-Anne-du-Nord River winds its way to the I'Île d'Orleans Channel, it makes deep cuts into the rocky countryside, offering some of the most spectacular vistas you can imagine. To make access to the gorge easier, the park's curators have created a series of dramatic pathways and swinging bridges that take guests right to the edge. From Québec City, the park is approximately a 45-minute drive.

TADOUSSAC. Upon departing Tadoussac wharf, this tour company takes customers on the trip of a lifetime. Croisières à la Baleine specializes in scenic cruises up the dramatic Saguenay Fjord. These are a must if you are visiting the area for the first time, for there is no better way to appreciate the fjord's beauty than from the river itself. Some lucky tour groups have even spotted the occasional whale. Reservations are a must.

STE-IRÉNÉE. Each summer, the Domaine Forget International Festival attracts some of Canada's best musicians, who also come to train with the Académie de Musique et de Dance. Even if it's not festival time, visitors may still stop by and tour the beautiful grounds free of charge. Several historical markers scattered throughout the area detail the history of the Domaine and the Forget family.

ÎLE-AUX-COUDRES. With dual soaring spires, the Île-aux-Coudres' historic Saint-Louis Church dates from the latter half of the 19th century. The church's interior and exterior have remained virtually unchanged since its construction and, inside, you'll find examples of sculptor François Baillairgé handiwork – two intricate, hand-carved statues of Saints Flavian and Louis. Visitors will also want to walk about 200 yards northeast and visit one of the church's original stone processional chapels, which dates from the 1830s.

BAIE-ST-PAUL. The artistic heart and soul of Québec's Charlevoix region, Baie-Saint-Paul does not lack for museums and galleries. If you are a lover of regional artwork, among the must-see museums on your agenda is the Expo Center, whose brick and glass exterior seems somewhat out of place in this lovely riverside community. Inside, you'll find a cornucopia of regional and contemporary artwork, as well as exhibits that showcase the talents of native Inuit artists and craftsmen.

LES ÉBOULEMENTS. For a true look into the past, make the trip down to Les Éboulements to see this mill, which dates back to the late 18th century and falls under the auspices of the Canadian Heritage of Québec. Built by settler Jean-François Tremblay, the gristmill overlooks a small stream and waterfall and still runs on its original parts. Nearby, you'll find the former seigneurial manor owned by the Sales-Laterrière family; the Brothers of the Sacred Heart have maintained the home since the late-1940s. The mill's driveway is about 500 yards west of the road to quaint St-Joseph-de-la-Rive. Don't forget to stop by the mill's bakery, where delicious white bread, tarts and raisin bread are prepared.

CLERMONT. Situated in a dramatic river gorge carved by glaciers thousands of years ago, this beautiful park quickly earns a special place in the hearts and memories of its visitors. Flanked by mountain peaks that rise more than 3000 feet, the Malbaie River winds its way through some of Eastern Canada's most remote country, offering some of the area's most spectacular outdoor activities. The park features numerous hiking trails and bike paths with varying degrees of difficulty, as well as primitive campsites. In the summer months (June-mid August), river cruises run up and down the Malbaie – make sure you make reservations well in advance (418-665-7527).

BAIE-STE-CATHERINE. Sitting on a high cliff that overlooks the confluence of the Sanguenay and Saint Lawrence Rivers, the Pointe Noire Observation Center offers some of the most breathtaking panoramas you can imagine. On one side, you have a clear, sweeping view of the icy blue Saint Lawrence. If you're lucky, you'll catch a glimpse of a beluga or finback whale. On the other, you've got the forbidding cliffs of the Sanguenay Fjord, a geographic marvel unique in this part of North America. Be sure to bring your camera– you'll want to capture all of it.

TADOUSSAC. One would be hard-pressed to pick out a more ideal location for a chapel than this one – overlooking the St. Lawrence River. Dating from 1747, Tadoussac's Indian Chapel stands as one of the oldest wooden chapels in Canada. It was built by Father Claude-Godefroy Cocquart, a Jesuit missionary, and served as the area's Indian mission. Today, services are no longer held here; however, the chapel houses a collection of unique religious and regional artifacts.
