WEST LAFAYETTE. The first fortified white settlement in what would eventually become the state of Indiana was established by the French in 1717 to protect their ever-expanding fur-trading operations. Constructed on the banks of the Wabash River across from an Indian village, Fort Ouiatenon was home to a small population of French during and after the Revolutionary War. In 1791, General Washington commanded the fort be destroyed, and it was little more than ruins until the local citizenry began to restore it in the mid-20th century. Today, Fort Ouiatenon features a museum, picnic shelters, recreational facilities, and a boat launch, making it a great place to spend a summer day with the family.
