DOWNTOWN - SOUTH. The southern terminus of Lansing's Capital Avenue is enlivened by the presence of a beautiful estate garden, whose peonies, roses, anemones, asters, and spring and fall perennials maintain a colorful presence for eight months of the year. When the gardens were completed in 1942, they quickly became a local favorite for residents and out-of-town guests to spend warm afternoons lazing among Japanese maples, crabapples and dogwoods. In the 60s, the completion of I-496 isolated Cooley Gardens from the downtown area. No longer convenient to downtown residents, the gardens were neglected and fell into disuse. Today, however, they're experiencing a bit of a comeback thanks to the help of the Friends of Cooley Gardens, a group dedicated to preserving the gardens' beauty.
