DOWNTOWN. Locally renowned shrimp cocktails and 24-hour dining: this place just screams "Vegas." Located at the historic Golden Gate – the city's oldest hotel – Bay City Diner introduced shrimp cocktails to the casino scene as early as 1959. To this day they offer them in old-fashioned sundae glasses for 99 cents. For $2 more, try the "Big Shrimp" cocktail, which features – you guessed it – bigger shrimp!
NORTHWEST LAS VEGAS. Open since 1955 (making it one of Vegas's longest-running eateries), this restaurant – in both decor and food – has real Western flavor. Cowboy memorabilia adorns the walls, and plates are graced with hearty "ranch hand" cuisine like mesquite-grilled steaks and barbecued ribs. If you can finish the gargantuan 32-ounce "Diamond Jim Brady" prime rib, dessert is on the house!
WEST OF THE STRIP. Vegas's Chinatown may not be as famous as San Francisco's, but it's still a fabulous place to feast on authentic Chinese cooking. Rated consistently by locals as among the best in Las Vegas, Emperor's Garden specializes in spicy, flavorful Szechwan and Mandarin cuisines. It also has an ambiance that lets you know you're in Chinatown. Unlike most Chinese restaurants, this one's open for breakfast too!
DOWNTOWN. You can't get more "Las Vegas" than a buffet – after all, the city's been called the "Buffet Capital of the World." As a result, there's a seemingly endless supply of all-you-can-eat gorging grounds, but locals don't pay for expensive Strip buffets every time they want to stuff themselves. Instead, they go to Main Street Station's buffet: great food, an extensive selection, and very reasonable prices.
DOWNTOWN. If you're in the market for a true, old-style Vegas experience, then visit Golden Steer. The city's oldest steakhouse, this legendary restaurant has hosted diners like Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and Dean Martin since 1958. The atmosphere is truly vintage Vegas, and the place's longevity among the glittering giants of the Strip is a testament to the quality of the food!
DOWNTOWN. It may be subterranean, but this highly regarded restaurant beneath the Four Queens Casino is anything but a hole in the wall – it's more like a hidden treasure. Rife with special touches (every female guest receives a red rose with dinner), professional and cordial service, delicious food, and romantic atmosphere, Hugo's Cellar is a local favorite for gourmet dining.
WEST LAS VEGAS. Fanatics won't find a better place to get an old-fashioned thick, juicy burger! Touted by the Food Network as "the best hamburger in Las Vegas," the offerings at Kilroy's – a popular local haunt since 1991 – are casual, affordable, and best of all, tasty. Huge portions and friendly service make this neighborhood watering hole worth returning to time and time again.
WEST OF THE STRIP. Vegas has a sizeable Mexican population, so it's no wonder that Mexican fare is popular around these parts. Family-owned Ricardo's, a perennial local favorite, has been voted "Best Mexican Restaurant" an astounding 20 times in the Las Vegas Review-Journal Reader's Poll. It boasts authentic cuisine and an atmosphere that whisks you away to old Mexico. As an added bonus, Ricardo's group menus allow you to sample many of its delicious dishes.
EAST OF THE STRIP. It's no secret among Las Vegans that The Tillerman is the place to go for fresh seafood. That's why it's been a Vegas landmark and a local favorite for almost 30 years. Just five minutes from the Strip, the restaurant has seafood flown in from all over the world, and its steaks are nothing to sneeze at either! Furthermore, the award-winning wine list contains selections you won't find everywhere.
WEST LAS VEGAS. Not all of Vegas's fine dining restaurants are located on or near Las Vegas Boulevard – Vintner Grill is tucked away in the heart of the neighborhood of Summerlin. Its strategy of serving quality cuisine like you'd find on the Strip and maintaining an off-Strip location has quickly made it a local hotspot. A seasonal menu featuring Mediterranean-influenced American dishes changes daily. Maybe you stumbled upon it during your travels. Perhaps a friend told you to go. Maybe you live in the city, and it's your special place. However you've come to know it, it's that one special restaurant that just defines the city. You know the ones you love; now, we'll tell you the treasures in other cities. Discover established eateries with distinct character, hole-in-the-wall diners, or high-end, chef-run establishments. We'll let you know what locals like and give you a leg up on what's best and brightest.
