While the Strip lays claim to many of Vegas's most enticing, spectacular sights and attractions – including elaborate resorts, high-profile restaurants, velvet-rope clubs, and upscale shopping – the city isn't completely defined by its flossy main thoroughfare. A host of less-publicized establishments also populates the town, catering to folks who want fun without fanfare, experience without expense – or at least to have them downplayed. Downtown Las Vegas showcases this sort of neighborhood appeal. Rife with terrific opportunities, it's not only less slammed than the Strip, but it's kinder to the pocketbook as well.

The first priority for any vacation is a place to stay, and Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino sets you up in style. Soft-hued rooms outfitted with lots of curved furnishings provide soothing environs, and even the property's basic rooms offer comfortable amenities. Suites, of course, up the ante on luxury, and if you're ready for pampering, the hotel spa promises lots of body-cosseting treatments, perfect for some relaxing downtime. But if you're a Vegas die-hard, be assured that the casino can easily deliver all the gaming thrills you desire. More than 38,000 square feet of space is devoted to such pursuits, and the place has even garnered awards for its service and payoffs. Should you want to relax in the desert sun, however, head for The Tank, the hotel's dramatic, $30-million pool complex, which boasts everything from a shark tank and a bar to a three-story waterslide.

Perhaps one of Downtown's biggest attractions is Fremont Street Experience, a walkable, five-block district of entertainment, dining, and shopping that holds visitors in thrall. During the day, there's plenty to browse, including lots of nearby shops and casinos, and at night, an LED screen stretched overhead is a marvel of sound, light, motion, and fun. Not only will the Experience give you plenty of sensory stimulation, but it will also introduce you to the historic street where the city began just over a century ago.

Need a bite of lunch? If you're intent on moving quickly, give Dona Maria's Tamale Shop a try. The affordable, family-run place is open all day, so when you arrive, it'll probably already be bustling with locals who can't say enough about its authentic fare and zesty salsas. Expectedly, tamales – chicken, cheese, and pork – are the main draw, but everything's good, as pleased smiles and animated conversation indicate. If you're in the mood to relax, have a margarita and be lulled into momentary inactivity.

Afterwards, gather the kids and head to Lied Discovery Children's Museum, which earns raves time and again for its quality exhibits. Science and the arts are taught through interactive displays, and little tykes can learn about desert animals, see how waves are formed, discover what's behind electricity, peer into a microscope, and even pilot a space shuttle. A parents' room and a venue for babies add value to the group experience, and you certainly can't beat education disguised in myriad hands-on activities.

If you don't have little ones in tow, consider a trip to Las Vegas Premium Outlets instead of the children's museum. No one can resist a bargain, especially when it involves merchandise you've not encountered lately (or before!). This outdoor shopping center, stylish and hip with palm trees and soaring fabric pavilions, lets you explore 120-some shops to your heart's content. From Lacoste to Liz Claiborne, Skechers to Samsonite, you'll find plenty for the entire family. Food? Coffee, sushi, ice cream, deli sandwiches, and more are right at hand.
