DOWNTOWN.   Occupying the portion of downtown Vegas where the city began, this pedestrian mall is more than just shopping or a simple nod to the past. The attraction in the heart of Old Vegas presents a goodly array of retail venues, restaurants, casinos, and performance stages, all of which provide welcome distraction throughout the day and night. The real draw, however, is an LED screen canopy stretched overhead the length of five football fields, 90 feet above visitors. Once twilight falls, shows and videos are broadcast larger-than-life on the screen, granting folks below a variety of entertainments that riff on the American experience, marine creatures, extraterrestrial life, and more. Music, sound, and light engulf you during the shows, which beautifully unite spectacle and technology. They take place on the hour and are absolutely free.   (© 10Best)

A 90-foot canopy with over 12.5 million LED lamps gives whole new meaning to high-definition. Vintage casinos and historic neon signs, restored and re-lit, give a sense of historic Las Vegas. Be sure not to miss the celebrated Light and Sound show and the chance to see downtown Vegas away from the Strip. (from Sunset)

Millions of lights over several blocks on Fremont Street create phenomenal shows regularly in the evening across 4 closed-off city blocks. The shows are different throughout the evening and are coordinated with a state-of-the-art sound system. The show has recently been upgraded and is better than ever, truly a reason to go Downtown.

The Fremont Street Experience is more more than just the light show. There are street performers and artists, kiosks and food stands. On weekend nights, there are also free concerts. This is a great place to come people-watch. You can find inexpensive bottled beer (many different domestic and imported varieties) at Sassy Sally's. After 10pm, be sure to head to Binion's Horseshoe for "The Natural" steak and eggs breakfast for $3.99 (last I checked). If you want a buffet, head straight to Main Street Station. They have one of the best buffets (and nicest looking casinos) in Las Vegas. Gentlemen, don't fall for the "Free Admission" lure at "The Girls of Glitter Gulch" strip club. They hit you with the two drink minimum (about $6.50 a drink) and they DON'T serve alcohol. Go to Olympic Gardens or Crazy Horse 2 instead. Parents be aware that despite the FSE , downtown Las Vegas is NOT family friendly. There is nothing inside the downtown casinos for children. Bring them here to enjoy the light show and to walk around. They'll enjoy it.
