EAST OF THE STRIP. This off-Strip, down n' dirty biker bar attracts an eclectic mix, but locals know it as a place for serious shots, no-frills live punk, and the best jukebox in town. More adventurous types can sample one of the two house specialties: the Bacon Martini (a little grease is a good thing) and Ass Juice, a fabled concoction of several liquors and fruit juice. Goth murals cover the walls, the bar's only stab at decor. If the place itself isn't entertainment enough, pool tables and slot machines stand at the ready.

THE STRIP. Occupying a swank location in the basement of the Barbary Coast, this trendy bar and Art Deco lounge boasts hip, library-like furnishings: bookshelves, cozy sofas, leopard chairs, and tropical plants. Concoctions like the lychee martini are sure to please, but prepare yourself: these drinks don't come cheap. A cozy, candle-lit dining area off the lounge offers Mediterranean-style fare, and entrées range from seven-hour leg of lamb to crab cakes. Each night, a small jazz ensemble entertains audiences with light, soulful grooves.

WEST OF THE STRIP. Perched atop the Palms, this trendy bar boasts retro-inspired styling and incredible views of the Strip and the city's lights. It's a favorite of tourists, who often wait for hours to go up the elevator and into its glass-walled environs. Folks ordering bottle service are often favored for the seating, but all are welcome to mingle, sometimes with celebrities. A cantilevered outdoor deck has even more immediate views, and if you're game, a plexiglass square in the patio lets you peer down at the pool, some 400 fear-inducing feet below.

THE STRIP. Just look for the headless statue of Lenin if you're trying to find Red Square, the Mandalay Bay bar deeply concerned with all things martini. Espresso, raspberry, and chocolate are just a few of the varieties on offer; whatever your choice, keep it properly chilled on the ice bar. As you'd expect, the vodka selection is ample. Select your own bottle from the walk-in freezer, or enjoy a vodka flight at your table. Fine food, including a sampling of Russian caviars, is served to complement the impeccable libations.

THE STRIP. Deceptively sweet cocktails and a surprisingly varied beer selection make elegant, trendy V Bar a vital part of the Vegas nightlife scene. Sink into a plush couch amid softly burning candles while you sip a candy-flavored Crystal Martini and strike up a conversation, or try the champagne-splashed Black Cherry Love, a house specialty. Low lights and an opaque glass wall punctuated with peepholes create an air of intrigue. DJs occasionally transform the relaxed atmosphere with jazz-flavored house.

WEST OF THE STRIP. One of the Strip's swankiest lounges, the VooDoo spellbinds with its exclusive, dressed-to-the-nines clientele and suave bartenders who are prone to bust into juggling routines at random intervals. This chic nightspot, located at the top of the Rio Casino Resort, offers spectacularly sweeping views of the city and an open-air veranda area where patrons can enjoy a cool desert breeze and some of the Strip's most potent cocktails. In addition, each night the fabulous kitchen staff spices things up a bit with a fanciful Big Easy-style Creole menu. However, if you plan to dine, reservations are a must.

HENDERSON. Whiskey Bar's main attraction is its magnificent nighttime view of the brilliantly-lit Strip. An expectedly hip selection of cocktails and beer is served, but the focus is definitely on the scene and the decor. A wood-paneled, '70s-esque interior leads onto a dance floor, and sequestered nooks dressed with plasma screens dot the space if privacy is in order. Rande Gerber (tycoon-husband of Cindy Crawford) has brought the success he created with LA's SkyBar to Vegas.
