More about Leeds
Leeds is known as a manufacturing and industrial hub and as the financial and commercial capital of Yorkshire County. Textiles and furniture have been the big breadwinners. For example, the famous Thomas Chippendale began his furniture business here. Despite Charles Dickens's claim that Leeds was one of the "beastliest" places in England, the city has seen an urban rejuvenation. In fact, it was recently named "Environment City of the United Kingdom." With a thriving cultural scene and a hopping nightlife, the city has much to offer. The Victorian Center, as well as the restored warehouses along Leeds Liverpool Canal, offers a trendy collection of bars, cafés, and restaurants, including Harvey Nichols on Briggate. Points of interest include the renowned West Yorkshire Playhouse, the impressive City Art Gallery, the stately Harewood House, and the ruins at Kirkstall Abbey.
