10Best's Lexington Events
-- Kelly Sigmon, 10Best Travel Editor
With its horse-racing prominence – bolstered by myriad sporting and social events –Lexington has an indisputably busy events calendar. Each spring and fall, Keeneland becomes the city's focus, and the equine rush for glory and fame takes the forefront. Even after the electricity from these twice-yearly events dissipates, however, there's still plenty to do. Local culture shows off in full force when warm weather appears, first at Mayfest Arts Fair and later on at Woodland Art Fair. Also tapping into the headiness of summer, Kentucky Wine & Vine Fest marks the growing importance of the grape in the bluegrass region. Music, of course, always provides ample reason to celebrate, and the city welcomes folks from near and far to Festival of the Bluegrass, a tribute to a much-loved genre that is enjoying a resurgence as of late. If you want tunes to last beyond a once-yearly festival, turn out for Thursday Night Live, a warm-weather concert series set in the heart of downtown. Thanks to the city's diverse population, Lexington also delivers great festivals that cater to specific groups while welcoming even broader audiences. Among them are the well-attended Festival Latino de Lexington, Roots & Heritage Festival, Beaux Arts Ball, and Kentucky Women Writers Conference. And naturally, the town knows how to throw terrific parties at the times you'd expect. The Fourth of July and Christmas, for example, are staples on the celebration scene, and the spectacle and style that accompany them prove that locals can happily hew to the standards.
