South Indian food is fresh-made on the premises at this family-owned restaurant, and careful attention to spices and to balanced flavors make the place a popular stop-off. The vegetarian-friendly menu includes plenty of options, from satays and samosas to entrees centered around lamb, goat, chicken, seafood, and vegetables. Take, for example, mango chicken, fish curry, hot and spicy shrimp, and pan-fried goat as representative dishes. Lots of build-your-own dosas can also be had, along with mild, exotic desserts. Great lunch buffet too.

Superb Indian food is a welcome mainstay at Bombay Brazier, a locally owned place known for actively cooking food in a large skillet to avoid adding unnecessary oils. It's a healthier preparation and makes the already-delicious food that much better. Dishes like korma, vindaloo, and tikka masala can be made with your choice of meat, and tandoori options can also be had, along with wonderful curries. Naturally, vegetarian dishes are common, and you'll also find a selection of Indian wines and beers.

Festive and bursting with color, this Mexican restaurant offers a fiesta in both appearance and taste. It's a successful formula, as gauged by the crowds of patrons enjoying authentic south-of-the-border fare. You'll find all the usual menu suspects, including enchiladas, burritos, and chiles rellenos, but consider one of the incredible – although lesser known – dishes, such as fresh fish or a savory pork concoction. An amiable staff adds to the experience, and a second location can be found at 295 West New Circle Road (859-299-8299).

After husband and wife team Ben and Jeanie O'Daniel established their vineyard, they created its companion, this wonderful bistro. Boasting simple style, a copper-topped bar, and a sublime outdoor patio, the restaurant also serves terrific food. The changing menu is French-inflected, built around wines, and it features dishes like sweetbreads, braised chicken, lamb medallions, and oak-roasted salmon. As a result, folks flock to the place regularly, and often, they stay and linger into the night, wine glasses happily in hand.

Lexington's downtown French bistro is a convivial place, given to conversation and good food. It shares a name with the city's stylish sister town in Normandy, and it's become quite a culinary destination for folks in the area. Seared foie gras and steamed mussels serve as an apt introduction to dishes like grilled lamb chops, duck confit, and steak frites. Sauteed chicken and seared salmon or scallops also bridge the culinary terrain between comfort food and gourmet fare.

Natasha's airy environs incorporate a medley of international influences, from Balinese artifacts to African carvings, masks to textiles, basketry to rusted Moroccan lanterns. The effect is worldly but comfortable, an easy place to indulge in unusual dishes from central Europe to North Africa and beyond. Lush Basque lamb stew earns comfort-food points, and mushroom stew is rich with sour cream. Goulash, ratatouille, and chicken curry also earn kudos, as do sinful desserts that complete a meal beautifully. Gourmet and Turkish coffees too.

CHEVY CHASE. Clean-lined and contemporary, this establishment is just as you'd imagine a modern Japanese restaurant would be. Pale woods gleam in booths and table seating and are interspersed with dark squares in a suspended circular ceiling. From it, delicate pendant lights hang overhead like dew drops. At the rear, a sweeping bar commands attention. The Japanese cuisine is fresh and impeccable, and whether you choose sushi or some other Asian delicacy, you can be assured that quality, flavor, and presentation are unfailingly top-notch.
