More about Lincoln
In a country rife with history, Lincoln stands out as a former capital of Roman Britain, a medieval kingdom, and an inland port city, and it is now a thriving town set amid the rolling countryside. The top attraction is the majestic Lincoln Cathedral, which is a medieval masterpiece visible from all over town thanks to its vast proportions, its towering spires, and its sprawling hilltop perch. Though the city has been thoroughly modernized with the new Lincolnshire University and a variety of hotels, restaurants, and upscale shops, Lincoln has managed to retain much of its nostalgic charm. The city is divided into two distinct sections that are separated by a heart-pounding walk up the aptly named Steep Hill. Both "downhill Lincoln" and "uphill Lincoln" offer pedestrian-friendly cobblestone streets, medieval buildings, and laid-back pubs. A guided boat tour down the River Witham offers the best glimpse of how this friendly town has successfully combined the old with the new.
