CASTELO. Known as the "ancient window," this former castle provides a glimpse into the past and a stunning view of Lisbon. Located 110 meters (360 feet) above sea level, this castle is thought to pre-date the Roman invasion and served as the royal residence from the 14th through the 16th centuries. Major renovations in the 1930s saw the castle's ramparts and towers restored, and the 10 majestic towers are open for climbing. From there, you'll enjoy an awe-inspiring view of the Portuguese capital, the Tagus, the Alfama, and the Serras of Monsanto and Sintra.
