BELÉM. Construction began in 1802 but was halted upon the arrival of Napoleon's troops in 1807. The next 50 years saw further sporadic work, yet the palace was never fully realized. It was, however, the royal residence during the 18th and 19th centuries and now houses a museum and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. Stroll through two floors of romantic period decor and be sure to take in the particularly stunning throne room.
