ALFAMA. The aqueduct was built between 1732 and 1748 and spans 36 miles, bridging the Alcantara valley via a series of 35 arches. At the time of construction, the arches were the world's tallest, and they remain a formidable sight to this day, having survived the massive 1755 earthquake.
