BAIXA. The promenade was established following the devastating earthquake of 1755 and has been the site of numerous events over the years. Initially, only the elite were permitted to enjoy the promenade, a prohibition enforced until 1821. Among the charming fountains and café tables stands a richly detailed monument honoring WWI casualties.

CASCAIS. An established fishing community since the 12th century, the area blossomed during the 19th century into a lively forum of great food, water sports, and sunny relaxation. Windsurfing, pedal boats and water skiing are particularly popular here.

ALMADA. Erected during the late 1940s to publicly thank God for sparing Portugal during WWII. His arms outstretched, the 90-foot tall statue of Jesus stands atop a 270-foot high base, a poignant reminder of Christ's loving invitation. An elevator carries visitors to the top for a spectacular view of Lisbon.

BAIXA. The Elevador de Santa Justa was originally built in 1902 by Raoul Mesnier, although Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, designer of the Eiffel Tower, is often given credit. For a small price, the elevator will fly you from Baixa to the Barrio Alto, where you can get an amazing view of the city.

BELÉM. The Age of Discoveries is commemorated via this stunning 179-foot tall monument. Massive sculpture of a ship featuring statues of Prince Henry and 32 other leading figures of the period. Be sure to stop by the great museum inside the monument, as well as taking the elevator to the viewing platform.

ALMADA. Lisbon's long time aspiration to connect the two banks of the Tagus was realized in 1959 when plans were made to build this stately suspension bridge. Following the Revolution in 1974, the original title, "Ponte Salazar Bridge," was changed to "25 de Abril Bridge."
