1. London Marathon

The Buzz -- Inspired by his experience in the 1979 NYC Marathon, Chris Brasher worked tirelessly to bring a similar event to London. Now, more than a generation later, his efforts are well-received and well-attended. Competitors not only test their mettle, but along the route, folks make a joyous day of the event. Crowds gather, pubs host celebrations, and spectators applaud the efforts of everyone who participates. The marathon annually draws some 30,000 athletes, both amateur and professional. Although the race starts at 9am, spectators are encouraged to arrive well in advance to secure the best viewing spots. TUBE: Victoria or Green Park
