KENSINGTON. Sister restaurant to Kensington Place, Launceston Place is a bit more relaxed, with a cozy neighborhood feel similar to that of a country home. Food is contemporary British, with subtle influences from other international cuisines. The menu changes frequently, but you may find appetizers such as wild mushroom soup with bleu cheese straws, or twice baked goat's cheese soufflé. Main course selections might be traditional British, as in beer battered cod with mushy peas and chips or fillet steak with stilton rarebit, or show more of a global sensibility, such as pan fried sea bass with artichokes and beurre rouge or braised chili and cumin spiced lamb with couscous.

ST. JAMES'S. To dine at one of the top addresses in town, you'll need to call months in advance. The tres-chic diners who frequent this black-and-white room typically include members of parliament and celebrities, all of whom come for classic cuisine and unobtrusive service. Traditional British dishes fill the menu: deep-fried haddock with minted pea puree and chips, griddled scallops, roast rack of Herdwick lamb, and fish cakes (called "the best in the civilized world" by a local critic). But, international influences are evident in Thai-baked seabass, and interesting desserts include butterscotch and clotted cream ice cream with toffee sauce. A top pick for fine dining, and slightly easier to get a table at lunch if you're willing to go late. TUBE: Green Park

SOHO. Lindsay House is unique in London, standing out among Soho's hubbub and boasting a serene setting that's like having dinner at a friend's house – if your friend happens to live in a tasteful mansion and has a world-renowned chef. To enter, ring the doorbell, and a waiter will seat you in a cozy, elegant room as tastefully decorated as a private residence would be. Then there's the food: foie gras terrine, rabbit with artichoke and country toast, organic chicken with stuffed morels, sweetcorn and young leek. Follow with a peanut parfait with roast banana and caramel ice cream. TUBE: Leicester Square

SOUTH BANK. This Harvey Nichols stand-alone enterprise receives as much buzz today as it did when it opened in the late '90s, and one of its main draws is its rooftop location, which affords stunning views of the Thames and the London skyline. The posh dining room – with its high ceilings, fresh flowers, and sparkling china with colorful, geometric accents – is part of the restaurant's attraction. Plus, the impressive cuisine includes crab and sweetcorn pancakes with avocado, marinated seabass with tomato and coriander, and Barbary duck breast with red onion tatin and mandarin and ginger reduction. Thanks to its fine cuisine, terrific wines, great service, and fabulous views of the city, Oxo Tower is a top pick for fine dining. Be sure to request a table by the windows. COVENT GARDEN. Said to be the oldest in London, this restaurant has been around since 1789, and it honors that history by maintaining a sense of tradition in food and spirits rather than changing with the times. Comfort foods are the order of the day in the gorgeous, statue-lined dining room. Try scrambled eggs with salmon, Yorkshire pudding, succulent game dishes, or flavorful roasted leg of lamb with mustard mash. Two-course Post Theatre Supper Mon-Thu from 10pm £18. STRAND. The posh art deco Savoy Hotel's signature restaurant remains one of London's finest dining experiences. It also happens to boast, after the Oxo Tower, the best view of the Thames. A genteel crowd dons their finest threads to dine on a weekly changing menu that might include braised Wiltshire pork belly with sautéed Jerusalem artichoke, oven-roasted Gressingham duck breast with carrot ribbons and Swede and honey purée, and pan-fried red mullet fillet with baby courgette and grilled peppers with basil and caper velouté. Fine wines and elegant desserts (peach Melba was invented at the Savoy!) make this an unforgettable stop. A Chef's Table for 6-8 people is available. Reservations are strongly recommended and a dress code applies, no jeans or T-shirts. TUBE: Covent Garden or Embankment

STRAND. Jackets are no longer required at this "swish" dining room, although jeans and t-shirts are are discouraged, proving that Simpson's still has one foot firmly in the past. The menu is a celebration of British cooking with dishes like spit-roasted capon, steak with kidney and mushroom pie, pan-fried calf's liver, and braised oxtail. Daily roasts are the best deal and include loin of pork and fish pie. The masculine interior has dark paneling, huge chandeliers, and ornate mouldings. TUBE: Covent Garden
