WANDSWORTH. A favorite of the affluent local crowd, Chez Bruce sits right on the Wandsworth Common, offering enchanting views with its refined environs and award-winning French cuisine. The main dining room is conservatively clad in white hues, from walls to linens, and framed poster art adds a touch of color. Of course, the frequently changing menu has made the place a local treasure since it opened in 1995, thanks to dishes like fillet of sea bass, assiette of charcuterie, and tuna tartare. Splendid wine list. 3-course prix fixe dinner £37.50, 4-course £47.50. Set lunches £25.50-£32.50. TUBE: Clapham South or Balham

CITY. Southwestern French specialties have gained an excellent reputation at this fine restaurant, situated in London's answer to NY's meatpacking district. Smaller servings allow you to sample a good cross-section of Gascony-inspired dishes, and it's suggested that diners lucky enough to get a table order six small plates for dinner. Cassoulet, sweetbreads, foie gras dishes, and smoked eel in heavy cream are just a few of the delicious, rich treats available in the smallish, dark-wood dining room. 5-course prix fixe dinner £42. KNIGHTSBRIDGE. Signature restaurant of the exclusive Hyde Park Mandarin Oriental, Foliage has firmly secured its standing among London's elite dining options. Exemplary service perfectly complements the contemporary atmosphere – clean lines, geometric shapes, subdued lighting, and leather-upholstered furniture. Menu highlights include sea bass with blood orange, red pepper and cucumber; pigeon with celeriac, parsnip; and spiced chocolate and guava sorbet with exotic fruits and a raspberry tuille. Outstanding wine list. 3-course prix fixe lunch £25; 3-course dinner £50. TUBE: Knightsbridge

MAYFAIR. Opened in the autumn of 2001, this restaurant soon established itself among the best in London, a testament to the drive and vision of Gordon Ramsay. Known for its stylish, Art Deco decor and sophisticated attitude, the restaurant manages to keep its feet firmly grounded. And, you'll be hard-pressed to find better cuisine, thanks to dishes like tian of Cromer crab with marinated avocado, confit tomatoes and a black olive tapenade; cannon of salt marsh lamb with crystallised walnuts and cumin; thyme roasted sweetbreads; and caramelised banana and bitter chocolate parfait with hazelnut mousse. Diners may opt for a seat at the exclusive chef's table, which puts patrons at the center of the kitchen's action. 3-course prix fixe lunch £30; 5-course prix fixe dinner £70. TUBE: Bond Street

CHELSEA. Chef Gordon Ramsay is known for both his temper and his seafood dishes, which are often prepared with elaborate sauces. You may enjoy roasted sea scallops from the Isle of Skye with octopus, black pudding tempura, cauliflower purée and parmesan velouté; or pan-fried fillets of John Dory with Cromer crab, caviar, crushed new potatoes and a basil vinaigrette. Desserts are noteworthy, as well, such as a bitter chocolate cylinder with coffee granité and ginger mousse. The mural-lined dining room is a luxurious retreat, and chairs upholstered in tan suede tempt folks to linger. 3-course prixe fixe lunch £40; dinner multi-course tasting menu £90. TUBE: Sloane Square

CHISWICK. Younger sibling of well-regarded Chez Bruce and of The Glasshouse, this Chiswick charmer is garnering as much acclaim as its elders, thanks to fabulous New French cuisine and an atmosphere that's luxurious without being pretentious. The cuisine emphasizes France's southern and southwestern regions, and highlights have included ravioli of rabbit with spring greens and cep puree, and roast leg of lamb with dauphinoise potatoes, green beens and rosemary. A superb wine list and first-rate service round out the experience. Prix fixe lunch £24-28; 3-course prixe fixe dinner £33, 4-course £43. TUBE: Turnham Green

MAYFAIR. This wood-wrapped dining room rests a flight of stairs down from street level, a setting which lends it a dark, quiet feel. The restaurant is known for classic French cooking, impeccable service, and London's finest selection of cheeses and wines. The traditional menu is as rich as they come: think creamy soufflé Suissesse, hot foie gras with crispy duck pancake, or roast rib of French veal with morel mushroom sauce and a chartreuse de legume with mash mousseline. Multi-course prix fixe lunch £48, dinner from £95. TUBE: Marble Arch

KNIGHTSBRIDGE. Co-owned by Marcus Wareing and celeb chef Gordon Ramsay, Pétrus opened in 1999 and wasted little time collecting awards. The hotel restaurant boasts vibrant shades of red (in keeping with its bordelaise chateau namesake), elegant French blinds, and two large abacuses with blown-glass beads. The menu offers fare served in France's southwest corner, as evidenced by dishes like Norfolk suckling pig cooked for 24 hours with braised chicory pommes mousseline, or wild seabass poached with pink fir potatoes. MAYFAIR. Fresh flowers, modern art, soothing burgundy walls, and candlelight only serve to enhance Philip Howard's artistically presented French cuisine at The Square. Dishes show a light, contemporary touch, and the tasting menu is the best – and most affordable – way to experience the luscious cuisine. Among the menu's treats are lasagne of Devon crab with a shellfish cappuccino and champagne foam followed by herb-crusted saddle of lamb with shallot puree, artichokes, balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Three-course prix fixe £60, multi-course tasting menu £75. TUBE: Bond Street or Green Park
