WHITECHAPEL. Connoisseurs of curry find much to applaud at this exotic East Londoner, whose menu includes a sampling of delicious Indian and Pakistani fare: seekh kebabs, chicken tikka, tarka dhal, and a handful of flavorful curries. The interior departs a bit from traditional Indian decor, going for little more than etched mirrors and simply appointed tables – hey, this place pulls in expats with food, not scenery! STOKE NEWINGTON. Eldest member of the Rasa family (there are five other locations), Rasa N16 has firmly established itself as one of the area's best places for authentic South Indian vegetarian fare. Indeed, since 1994, folks have clamored to the modest yet colorful restaurant (yes, the front facade is painted pink!) for an array of flavorful dishes. Among them are thakki curry with fresh tomatoes cooked in yoghurt with fresh ginger, onions, and coriander and a hearty Kerala lentil curry with washed mung beans, split yellow lentils, tomatoes, and chilies.

MAYFAIR. Mayfair residents would have paid good money to keep news of this fabulous North Indian eatery from leaking out to hungry tourists. Unfortunately, resistance was futile, especially in regard to a place whose chic atmosphere and creative fare continually set new bars for excellence. The entree lineup includes murgh makhni (tandoori chicken in creamed fresh tomatoes with fenugreek leaves), achari bhindi (fresh okra tossed with onions, garlic, and pickling spices), and seasonal faves like grilled chunks of king fish in a marinade of ginger, chilli, yoghurt, ground spices and vine leaves. 2-course lunch prix fixe £17, 3-course £19. CHELSEA. Punjabi-inspired dishes earn top billing at this North Indian eatery, where owner-chef Andy Vama directs. The restaurant has received numerous honors, and its distinctly well-heeled clientele dine well amid ochre-hued walls, heavy teak furniture, original oil paintings, and authentic Khurja pottery. The menu's Indian fare includes vegetarian dishes like zeera aloo (potatoes, green chilies and cumin) and ma di daal (lentils in tomato-cream-ginger sauce), as well as meat-based options like saag chicken (spicy chicken with spinach) and tandoori salmon. An exquisite bar is accented with dark woods, and tables are appointed with white linens and lit by ultra-modern fixtures.
