BAYSWATER. You'll need to book early to get a table at this well-known spot, whose authentic Italian fare is served simply but with style, and is considered by many to be the best in London.
Starters include buffalo mozzarella and tomatoes atop thinly sliced fresh bread (called "carta di musica," or music paper) – unadorned but superb. Fresh crab with olive oil and lettuce is also basic but delicious, as are pastas, including homemade noodles with a selection of fresh herbs and crushed walnut. TUBE: Notting Hill Gate

PUTNEY. Accomplished cuisine leaps to the forefront at this intimate, charming restaurant, which sits not far from the Thames. Classified as "modern Italian," the food reads "simply delicious" to regulars. Simple but appealing starters range from octopus salad with panzanella to ravioli with aubergine; standout main courses have included roast rabbit with celery, onion, peppers, capers and pine nuts, and roast turbot with potato, artichokes and olives. Steaks and seafood are available as well, along with amazing pastas. Lush, fruit-accented desserts deserve notice, and a terrific list of Italian wines is a welcome boon. TUBE: Putney Bridge

FITZROVIA. On stylish Charlotte Street, home to several interesting restaurants, Passione stands out, thanks to a pinkish exterior, pale aqua tiled walls, and portraits of Italian food. Even better than illustrations, though, are the dishes themselves. Dried carpaccio, tuna with celery and fennel, pasta parcels with spinach and ricotta, and pan-fried sea bass with asparagus are among the fresh specialties served with homemade rolls and foccaccia. Pasta dishes are relatively inexpensive but perfectly prepared. End your meal with wild strawberry ice cream and a cappuccino. TUBE: Goodge Street

CANARY WHARF. A standout dining option in Canary Wharf, Quadrato provides a chic setting wherein diners can show off their latest threads and enjoy fine wine and heavenly Northern Italian fare. Many dishes bear a modern touch, whether it's veal Milanese with rocket salad, or squid ink tonnarelli with lobster ragout and prosecco bagna cauda. Sunday's Tuscan brunch is an unforgettable affair featuring fresh seafood, terrines, and homemade breads. TUBE: Canary Wharf

WESTMINSTER. Pale, elegant Quirinale occupies a subterranean space near the Thames and finds great favor with neighborhood politicians. However, its exceptional cuisine is a real treat for anyone savvy enough to search it out. Starters are intriguing: for example, agnolotti filled with chestnuts and black truffles with celeriac purée and fontina cheese. Main courses are just as appealing, as evidenced by black olive crusted monkfish with potato purée and shallot vinaigrette or braised veal osso buco with gremolatea. A dizzying cheese course proves tempting, and a great wine list guarantees apt complements. TUBE: Westminster

HAMMERSMITH. Considered by many to be the finest Italian dining in London, this terrific restaurant also comes with steep prices and a wait – reservations should be booked at least a month in advance. The chefs, Rosie and Ruthie, write cookbooks and star in television cooking shows besides being fabulous cooks, so word of mouth is strong. Once you do make it in, you'll find elegant Italian food at its best. Lobster spaghetti, antipasto, baked fish, Tuscan soup, and asparagus-stuffed ravioli with sage butter and parmesan all win high marks. The bright, well-appointed room offers fabulous views. BERMONDSEY. "Tentazioni" means "temptations" in Italian, and this restaurant offers many, most of them centered around the place's hearty cuisine. The picturesque wharf setting also proves appealing, and you'll want to try for a table on the airy, white mezzanine. There, you can sample something wonderful, such as calamari with home-dried tomatoes and zucchini, filet of beef with basil crust, or monkfish saltimbocca with vegetables. An excellent, light dessert is lemon tart with passion fruit sorbet. TUBE: London Bridge or Tower Hill
