WAPPING.   Housed in a historic power station, this modern eatery offers quite an industrial setting -exposed pumps, hoists, and hydraulic machinery share space in the bustling, cafeteria-style dining space. What's more, from the open-plan kitchen, alluring aromas escape, serving only to intensify appetites. The place has a Modern European feel, and the fare has sufficiently enticed local critics, with dishes like crispy skin salmon with green papaya salad; asparagus, pea and broad bean risotto with baked ricotta; and char-grilled rib-eye steak with wild mushrooms, horseradish and crispy potato. When you eventually find this gem of a restaurant (ask the taxi driver for Prospect of Whitby and then look behind the brick wall!!) you will be delighted. The food is exceptional - if they have scallops on the menu you may want to order a double starter and forego the main course. A decent list of Antipodean wines, superb main courses and great desserts make this a fabulous place to take out of town visitors - competes more than favourably with the more fashionable 'west end' restaurants. Definitely one of my favourites in London.
