SHOREDITCH. This suave Shoreditch restaurant, which opened in August of 2001, occupies a converted warehouse and offers a spacious dining room outfitted with a long, stylish bar and black walnut and leather furniture. As for cuisine, brothers David and Rob have created a menu that features grilled whole dorada with lemon and chilli dressing, grilled line-caught yellow fin tuna with marinated red onion relish, and Portuguese-style steak with fried tomatoes. SHOREDITCH. As if hip Fifteen didn't already provide enough raw style for the young, trendy masses, celeb owner-chef Jamie Oliver saw fit to outfit the basement eatery with one of the funkiest bars around. Where but here could you find a drink-friendly space, hued in pink, that looks like a set from a Kubrick film? Even better, the place doesn't rely just on panache to keep patrons loyal – outstanding cuisine and potent cocktails more than take care of that. And for early risers, the good news is that Fifteen Trattoria, located upstairs, opens for breakfast at 8:30 in the morning! Mon-Fri set lunch 2 courses £22, 3 courses £25; A la carte menu at lunch only; Dinner tasting menus £50-60, £90-100 with wines. TUBE: Old Street

ST. JAMES'S. This eatery proudly boasts one of London's most creative kitchens, which helps it earn strong accolades from locals and critics alike. Adding to its popularity are a professional, formal approach to service and a real special occasion feel. Menu highlights include duck confit, grilled lamb and steak, and fresh seafood, all deliciously seasoned and artistically presented. Fixed-price lunch and dinner menus are available. MAYFAIR. Located inside the Nicole Farhi shop, this ultra-stylish café is popular among the monied set for breakfast and lunch. Light, airy, and decorated in shades of white and cream, it caters to ladies who lunch and to busy executives, who can both grab quick bites or have a more leisurely repast. The decor's light touch is repeated in the food. Try a warm spinach salad with fennel and feta or grilled skewered scallops with pea puree and crispy prosciutto. Desserts include maple spice cake with poached pears. TUBE: Green Park or Bond Street

MAYFAIR. A romantic alternative for folks looking to dine in Mayfair, Pescatori features oak-paneled walls and what many regard as one of London's friendliest waitstaffs. Seafood earns top billing, and the kitchen serves a delightful array of Mediterranean dishes, ranging from scallop-and-lobster ravioli to marinated tuna tartare. What the wine list lacks in sheer numbers, it more than makes up for in quality and creativity. Reservations are suggested. TUBE: Green Park

BROOK GREEN. Although the name may evoke a ski-resort restaurant, this W6 gem is a far cry from that expectation. Instead, Sebastian Snow's neighborhood eatery is a bastion for gastronomes, thanks to a menu headlined by foie gras and fried egg on brioche, lamb three ways with sundried tomatoes and goat's cheese soufflée, and open ravioli with crab, chilli and salt cod. Well-spaced tables and modern decor with numerous black and white photos ensure that the setting keeps pace with the creative fare. TUBE: Hammersmith

CLERKENWELL. The Eagle, widely considered the grand-père of London's gastropubs, has been drawing rave reviews since 1991. Classically English in character, dress, and quaff, the place spices things up a bit when the menu takes the spotlight. Indeed, Med-influenced fare warrants top billing. It also shares space with British standards – appearing alongside dishes like Bifeana steakare a delicious guinea fowl and other creative grilled items. TUBE: Farringdon

WAPPING. Housed in a historic power station, this modern eatery offers quite an industrial setting -exposed pumps, hoists, and hydraulic machinery share space in the bustling, cafeteria-style dining space. What's more, from the open-plan kitchen, alluring aromas escape, serving only to intensify appetites. The place has a Modern European feel, and the fare has sufficiently enticed local critics, with dishes like crispy skin salmon with green papaya salad; asparagus, pea and broad bean risotto with baked ricotta; and char-grilled rib-eye steak with wild mushrooms, horseradish and crispy potato.
